I am sure you would have heard about that famous politician who literally did so for her foster son's wedding. Or that diamond merchant who chartered an aircraft and solemnized the ceremony midair. What about that steel tycoon who bought a "French castle" as gift for his wife. The list is endless. There is a hotel with a golden loo. Then people have garments (even under garments) studded with jewels.

All this fills me with distaste. What a waste of resources. Just because one has been blessed with a silver spoon, or may be several spoons, doesn't mean it can be used to scoop garbage. These people are criminals and I am sure they will pay for it, one day or the other. This went on till that day....

On that day I had been shopping for little odds and ends at the nearby bazaar and happened to enter my favorite CD store. "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix", had been released on DVD! I grabbed a copy and ran home, only to find the disk getting stuck exactly at the famous first kiss scene. Shop insisted that all their products are genuine (thereby defect free) and for testing they sent me to the neighboring electronics store along with the sales man.

The electronics store had a cute young girl at the cash counter. She greeted the sales man and soon both of them pulled out a DVD player and started testing the disk.

They were quite friendly with each other and began chatting, oblivious to my presence. I pretended to be invisible and was enjoying their conversation. Suddenly she took the DVD cover and asked, "What is the cost of this disk". Seven hundred rupees answered the young man. My god! SEVEN HUNDRED RUPEES, she exclaimed and that too for a Harry Potter movie??? Every now and then it is shown on TV. By the way, who is the rich guy.... Before much damage could be done, she was silenced by a sharp jab of his elbow and he pointed me with his eyes. Her face turned crimson but I pretended to be busy watching the screen.

Seven hundred rupees meant quite a sum to her, maybe a good part of her weekly earning. Now onwards it appears to be a three way fight for the tittle. Now that the F1 circus heads Europe, almost all the teams are relieved. Basically all the teams are Europe based. They do bulk of thier testing there and hence are more comfortable.

The only dessert race, was taxing. One could see almost all the drivers resting thier heads on the side of the car. Robert Kubica had a dream qualifier, but God alone knows what he was waiting for, when the red lights went off. It seems (according to his interview) he had wheel spin problems, during the warm up lap. By the time the BMW started responding, the Ferraris were gone. Lewis Hamilton also found his car unable to pick speed and soon dropped back. Later the BMWs did gather pace and both Nick and Kubica lapped fastest couple of times. But the battle was already lost. Most probably thier softer compound tyres were not jelling well with the hot track.

The uneventful race saw some good battles in the middle. First it was Fisi vrs Hamilton. Even with his ForceIndia car Fisi was able to hold Lewis for 3 laps. Another battle was Alonso vrs Barichello. Eventually Alonso managed to hold on. Honda seems to be improving and I hope Toyota and Williams will also raise thier performance a notch higher.

The highlight of the race had been flawless driving of Filippe. He did not lock his tyres even once. Even after the race his display of emotions were controlled (quite unlike him). There was no finger raising or gestaculations. For once it seemed as if it is snowing in Brazil.

Heikki Kovalainen, showed he is the next Iceman. He kept his cool and finished the race at fifth, managing the points for himself and the team. I repeat, watch out for this man.

The Rookies were all unimpressive. One of our fellow ilander had pointed out that Lewis Hamilton had set the benchmark very high and out expectations have risen too much. Still they have to prove thier worth. Many of them have stepped into the seats vacated by much more experienced and talented drivers. Let us see how long thier teams back them.

No F1 race for three weeks. What do we fans do? Let us go to Portugal (Estoril circuit) to enjoy some MotoGP action this weekend.

MotoGP: Its a Spaniard in Spain

MotoGP season 2008 has started with several changes. I would like to mention some of them as I feel they are notable (strictly from my perspective).
Firstly Valentino Rosi hasdecided to switch over to Bridgestone tyres. This has been his personal choice, after a couple of lackluster seasons with Michellin. Fiat-Yamaha team is still sticking to Michellin for the second rider.

Three 250cc riders have now entered the MotoGP arena. Andrea Dovizioso, Alex de Angelias and Jorge Lorenzo. In addition the world SuperBike champion for the year 2007, James Toseland has also landed in MotoGP.Let us see what this season has in store for us fans and spectators.

I missed the Quatar GP, it was the first night MotoGP race. But was able to catch the Spanish GP, which took place on Sunday. Quatar saw the reigning champ, Casey Stoner start with a victory. The surprise package was Lorenzo (two times 250cc champ) reaching the podium with a second place ahead of Dani Pedrosa. Rossi managed 5th place.

Spanish GP at Jeerz was even more exciting. Jorge Lorenzo surprised everyone with his pace in the qualifiers to take the pole. The race had an exciting start when Pedrosa sprang to lead right from the start. Stonner stunned everyone when he managed to overtake the entire crowd, only to end up
on the gravel. He performed this feat twice and finished at the eleventh place. Dani Pedrosa was in a class of his own, opening up a 4 second plus lead and clinching his maiden MotoGP victory, in front of his home crowd. Valentino Rosi did not waste the opportunity when it presented itself. He pulled an audacious over taking to take the second place but had to fight tooth and nail with his teammate Lorenzo, to maintain it. Fiat Yamaha team must be happy with the two podium positions but will be hoping that they will not be witnessing the MotoGP equivalent of Alonso Hamilton spat.

As of now Pedrosa leads the championship tally, followed by Lorenzo, Rossi and Stonner. Let us see what happens at the Estoril circuit.

Malaysia Mixes it up - Kimi, Kubica & Kovalainen

What better start could it have been. The front grid in all Scarlet and McLarens handed 5 grid position penalty, to start 8th and 9th. At the end though the prancing horse was on top, it had to share podium space with the three pointed star. That is F1, you never know till the chequered flag waves.

The Qualifiers

Ferraris had the pace, but Mclarens were not much behind. When Q3 started I was surprised to see Hamilton comming out on the harder compound tyres. Both the Ferraris were on the softer compound. This year qualifier does not have the fuel burning lap (since there is no top up allowed) so, I could not understand this. Quite naturally their flying laps were no where near the Ferraris. Later Mclarens changed to softer compounds, by that time the war was almost over. The track was crowded, Timo Glock"s lap delayed Hamilton"s flying lap and we all know what happened next.

The Race

Excellent start by the Ferraris and Kimi was very sensible in not trying to force a over taking by the first turn. As I have always said Filipe drives with his heart not with his head. Had Kimi tried both the Ferraris would have ended up in the gravel trap.

I was expecting the pit stop over taking from Kimi. How many times we have seen the Iceman pull this trick. He was forcing Filipe to go faster and faster. The moment Filipe dived into the pit lane, Kimi executed a series of three fastest laps and pitted. Stayed half a second shorter and came out ahead of his team mate. Massa should have kept his head down and completed his race. He could have tried something similar at the second pit stop. But Massa being Massa tried to step up on
the gas and ..........I think he is yet to come to terms with the absence of traction control.

Lady luck was not with Lewis this time. A five position penalty and then a 20sec pit stop. But the way he fought back to the points tally shows his mettle. Iam really happy for Kubica and Heikki. Even last year I used to think, only if Renault had a decent car, Heikki would have rubbed shoulders with Lewis Hamilton. Iam happy he is proving my point.

Finally Toyota showed some promise. Let us hope this time their performance will match the budget. Trulli showed what an artist he is behind the wheels, if he gets a decent car. His drive was copy book, not even once he oveshot the chicane, not even once on the grass. Teriffic.

Fernando tried every thing known, but at the end, with out a good car even a double world champ is helpless. We all remember Schumi in 2005 season, don"t we?

BMW is getting stronger with every GP. We can expect a three way contest for the tittle this year.

I am not sure how happy will the Ferari team be after this race. Such a fantastic oppertunity and still they are behind McLaren and BMW in the tally. The season is yet to gain momentum and still lot of action is awaited. Ferrari being Ferfari will only march forward.

I should end this blog with my appreciation for Fisi for making it to 12 position on the Force India car this proves what a fighter he is. I still can"t understand, why Renault chose Piquet Jr. over him.

Let us wait for the desert race. Iam sure it will be worth watching.

Waiting for Sepang

First day of practice on the Sepang Circuit. Clearly Ferari was scorching the new surface with Filipe and Kimi leading the time sheets and Mclaren closely in tow. With no clear data on the fuel loads it is very difficult to asses. let us see what happens tomorrow in the qualifiers.
Qualifying starts at 11.30 (IST) in the morning, when most of us will be more than neck deep in Holy colours (I mean Holi colours). How many times do we see both the Feraris resting (in peace). I have always felt Filipe drives with his heart (not his head) and thus can be forgiven for getting carried away. Relax Filipe this car won"t handle the way last year"s did, there is going to be lot of under steer and you can"t brake late comming into the curves. But what about Kimi? Agreed he had his share of bad luck, with the car ditching him in the qualifier. But what I fail to understand is the fact that, after doing all the hard work (the way he usually does) and reaching no.3, there was no need to attempt that over taking on Heikki, That too when he was on a single pit stop strategy. That was un pardonable. Well well even the Ice-man some times loses his cool. Keep your cool Kimi, you are still my favourite. I think this must have been the worst (or one of the worst) day for Ferari. Imagine not even one, I repeat, not even one Ferari engined car (there were six, Ferari, Toro Roso and Force India) made it to the chequred flag.

It was the perfect week-end for Lewis and Ron Dennis" smile only confirmed it. After all the pressure they have been through, Mclaren has shown why it is one of the most respected (not counting the colour blind population, who can see only scarlet) team in F1. If Timo-Glock had not crashed his other wise superb debut, Mclaren would have been 1-2 on the podium. Hard luck Heikki you had to pit when the safety car drove out. But you have made your mark.

Finally Nico Roseburg got an oppertunity to prove his worth and enthusiasm of the Williams team was worth watching. After all it was after some time (after 2005) they have a driver on the Podium. Hats off to Sir William for picking Nico, but again I can"t imagine why Nakajima? Last race (Brazil 2007) he knocked down one of their pit crew, this time Robert Kubica was the target.

Torro Roso also had it bad. With good strategy Sebastien Bourdais was about to be within championship points when the Ferari engine conked. Just 3 more laps to go. But there are many a slips between the cup and the lip. Still, it is remarkable hwo the old Minardi has shaped up.

One thing is for sure, the new regulations have made the race more exciting, even though as an engineer I would not appriciate any curbs on technology. It was really interesting to watch Fernando and Heikki fight it out, similarly the fight between Rubens and Kimi ......

Well folks hope all of you enjoyed the pile up. I think teams will be heading to the garage and drawing boards now. Let us hope they pour the money in the wind tunnel and test track and not into some lawyers pocket.

For guys who hoped some action from Force India,
It is the same Midland or Spykar team guys, managed by the same people. Just a new can of paint won"t improve things. With luck Fisi might be able to pull something up this season. Then it will be because it is Fisi behind the wheels and not because of the team. Today"s newspaper says (VM has said), they have hired three wind tunnels and are also consutling Aero experts. Let us wait and watch.

Sorry guys.
